They are always the best. These three waiters claim three different indigenous ancestries. The man on the left is Mayan.

Blue Yodel #9

"Standing on the corner I didn’t mean no harm
When a big policeman grabbed me by the arm.
Now, it was down in Memphis
On the corner of Beale and Main
He said now, hey big boy
I’m gonna have to know your name.
Now, you can find my name
On the tail of my shirt
I’m a Tennessee hustler
And I don't have to work."

Queen Mine Tour

Took my first Queen Mine Tour today. Excellent! My kids were with me.

Veteran Bisbee miner Roger McGinnis (left) does the best mine tour I could imagine. His colloquialisms are fantastic. His wit is dry. His knowledge is very extensive and authoritative. He even shows you precisely how dynamite charges are set.

Yikes. I almost took these guys out with my van yesterday. By the time I got the camera out, they were pretty settled. There were more, but they scattered from the rest of the herd.

Return of the HooDoo Men

It's been too long since Lar and Len were in Nogales. After giving the town a respite of several months, the notorious HooDoo men returned to a favorite-son welcome. Brenda, the Tohono O’odham shop mistress at San Xavier mission called ahead to warn the Yaqui bretheren of their imminent return. "I don't know where they were made," Brenda wept. "One of them is Potowatomie, I think, and the other is Ojibwa."
No, ma'am. They're Mojo.

Just a scant 10 days and Larree can see this sweet mug for real. Can you imagine waking up next to this face? I sure can't.

Worthy of an Oscar

"I Want to Live" (1958) features an extremely powerful and complex performance by Susan Hayward. You cannot help but weep at her desperate situation. She deserved that Oscar.

Robert Wise directed this amazing film, which has a very cool jazz layer beneath an otherwise nail-biting surface of increasing tension.

Susan plays Barbara Graham, a petty criminal who runs with the wrong crowd and gets framed in a murder, and she is sent to the gas chamber at San Quentin. That sequence alone is wrought with extremes of emotion and clinical coldness.

It's a true story that received sensational coverage in its day by the media. One of those reporters was newspaperman Ed Montgomery of the San Francisco Examiner. Simon Oakland plays Montgomery, who over time became convinced of Barbara's innocence and vainly crusaded for a sentence commutation.

The film even has good performances by actors such as Raymond Bailey (banker Milburn Drysdale from "The Beverly Hillbillies").

Sonoita Mercantile

When a person takes the scenic route from Tucson to SE Arizona, one MUST stop at the Sonoita Mercantile. The store has a little bit of everything in there: wine, snacks, candy, cute women, bikers, etc. The bathroom is real clean. The help is friendly. The wine is from local vineyards.

And there's a real nice steakhouse next door. It's got swingin' saloon doors and lots of Western decor.
